Patients Coming Off Anti-Obesity Jabs Put On Weight Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study reveals that individuals who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Research printed in a prominent health publication points out that while obese individuals often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People using such treatments must be aware of the danger of fast weight regain when the therapy concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a return to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.

Weighing Approaches

The analysis, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

The team point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically have a slower creep back—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Doctors propose the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.

These medications copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Chronic Condition?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals argue that, given the significant potential of relapse, the therapy is often life-long.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "underscore the chronic character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Accounts

Users who have discontinued the medication describe a powerful return of cravings.

"It was like a trigger flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said a patient.

This challenge is compounded if individuals have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Significant Use

Figures suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Use is greater among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians stress that while the jabs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success likely depends on integrated lifestyle changes.
