Congress Greenlights Legislation to Release Jeffrey Epstein Files

The Senate on Tuesday quickly approved to a measure that will mandate the disclosure of case documents related to the late pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, following a overwhelming vote in the lower house and a reversal by Donald Trump and his GOP allies. The White House gave in after months of trying to delay the cross-party initiative involving a controversy that has followed the president since his return to the White House.

Unanimous Passage in Congress

The Senate acted by consensus, which needs acceptance from each senator but does not require a individual voting process, accelerating the process. Earlier that day, the House passed by a huge margin the bill on a near-unanimous vote.

Citizens have been patient long enough. Those affected have waited patiently,” the top Senate Democrat said in a Senate remarks on Tuesday, before urging the Senate to adopt it by consent. “Let the truth come out. Let transparency reign.”

Next Steps

The bill next will be sent to Donald Trump for his endorsement. Trump indicated on Monday that he would sign the measure.

Though Trump has for months downplayed the controversy over the authorities' approach of the investigation as a “false narrative”, he voiced approval for the measure over the past few days, and announced he would sign the measure if it reaches his desk.

Response

The Democratic party, along with those affected and their advocates who were present in a public section, applauded after the bill was passed. Lone dissent came from Clay Higgins, who expressed concern he feared the measure would reveal specific data of people, those under scrutiny and others caught up in the investigation.
